A Merry Christmas and a Very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to All our Members and Friends.

Our Chairman, David Barton, is not in the best of health at the moment, so those wishes go ten fold to him and his family and we wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

In the meantime I have taken over the role of acting Chairman until such time as David is able to take the helm again in order that the Society may continue.

When I helped to start the Society in 1988 our aim was to be a non-politically affiliated, campaigning organisation. It was to provide a focus and voice for the people of Churchtown, Crossens and Marshside in order to conserve the buildings and the environment for the benefit of all who live, work and visit the cradle of what is now the township of Southport. At that time we were not submerged into the larger organisation called Sefton!

Over the years this role has gradually declined but I would like us to take our place, once again as a voice to be heard. I would like to hear about issues from you, both members and friends.

I have identified the following on which I believe we should be stating our case.

1. The Fogbell, Marshside Road
This has suffered from vandalism and neglect. We would like to see this brought back into its original state and then Listed as at least a Grade II listed building.

2. Former Sandplant, Marine Drive
Since Rainford’s vacated the site there has been speculation as to what is going to happen to the promontory and sandhills on which it stood. It is known that the RSPB and other bird and nature watchers would like to see it developed into a larger car park with a visitors centre with viewing facilities to overlook the Ribble Estuary. This is a World renowned site for birds. Such a development would bring in visitors, and employment for locals, to this, often neglected, part of Southport. Unfortunately, Natural England (formerly English Nature) an unelected Quango, want all of it removed and returned to the state it was in prior to 1960. The disruption entailed in the removal would be a disaster to the area as all the material would have to be transported away by heavy lorries.

What are your views?

3. Public Footpaths
Over the years several local footpaths have been lost due to landowners, including the Local Authority, blocking them off. Only the Coastal Footpath and the Stray are listed as ‘public rights of way’ in our area.

4. Grot Spots
Like me I am sure that you know of areas that need cleaning up and rubbish removed. Let me know!

Finally - Meetings.

At our last meeting before the summer break it was suggested that an afternoon meeting time may suit people better in the winter. As we would not be able to use Churchtown School at this time we were going to look for a suitable alternative such as Marshside Church Lounge. This has been put on hold for a while until we are reasonably certain that we will have sufficient people attending. It is very embarrassing to invite speakers and only a handful turn up. We will hopefully be able to restart early in the New Year.

We have decided that in view of the above we will suspend membership fees for twelve months. So get round your friends and acquaintances and encourage them to join FREE this year! We also need people to join the committee. Nothing too involved just a willingness to join in organising meetings and some events.

Thank you for being members and supporting us over the years.
